Case Study: Brief On-Campus Orientation Session
Overview of Project
CLI was asked to create a brief 3.5 hour on-campus freshman adventure orientation session. The session was designed to quickly develop small group interaction, familiarity, cohesion and support. After the program, students reported gains in the areas of social integration, attachment and worth.
Client Profile
The client was a small, private liberal arts college, with an undergraduate population of 1800 students.
Client Need
The client college wanted a high impact orientation session which would yield a bigger return on investment than a traditional classroom session. They were also interested in comparing an outdoor adventure orientation session to a traditional indoor session. CLI conducted a survey to determine program impact.
Program design
Students participated in three adventure activities set up on-campus, two low activities and one 15-foot portable group wall. Facilitation staff worked with orientation guides to welcome and introduce students and facilitate the session. The three modules were timed, and students rotated through each activity within a time span of three and a half hours.
Program Impact
CLI pre/post survey evaluations showed that students evaluated impressive gains in the area of feeling supported, worthwhile and socially attached. It could be observed that students’ energy levels increased and that they appeared connected and relaxed at the conclusion of the program. Later college-generated program evaluations showed that the program produced gains in the area of students’ opportunity to meet and get to know each other, and their sense of “feeling at home.”
